Sermon Notes

Are you a "Jacob"?

We’re beginning our first week in this series called “Wrestling with God,” where we’re looking at the life of Jacob.

Here are a few big takeaways to consider as we look at Jacob’s family:

  1. Even as followers of Jesus, we can be pretty messed up. Jacob and his family were considered “God’s people,” but they were still manipulative and deceitful. We are to “put away” our old self and “put on” the new self (Colossians 3:8-10).
  2. Unfortunately, sometimes the closer we are to people (like family), the more poorly we treat them. But we are to “bear with one another and forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven us.” (Colossians 3:13)
  3. Every healthy relationship (especially in a family) requires communication.
  4. Be aware of the danger of short-term gains leading to long-term pains.
