‘Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love and your great compassion.’ Psalm 51:1
Psalm 51 pulls back the curtain on what makes David ‘a man after God’s own heart.’ It is a psalm of confession and repentance. We glimpse the broken heart of one who has broken the heart of God.
Sunday we’ll spend some time with an ancient prayer pattern, the Prayer of Examen. Paul has this great line in 1 Corinthians 11 about examining our own lives before God rather than waiting for judgment to fall. The promise is that if we ‘confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).’
God is so good to bring us to this psalm of repentance when Baptists as a group are dealing with a very public reckoning of sin.
Let’s come together this Sunday to seek God for His great mercy and compassion.
